Her real nature is that of the first fully conscious Automaton, created by her Father Dr. Steven Sterling to act as his daughter after he was rendered infertile after being diagnosed with a seemingly terminal illness. A marvel of mechanical design and engineering, the level of detail required to recreate the most minute details of the human form including a sense of touch. However, she does not feel as fondly about herself, due to being different to the people around her and sworn to secrecy about her true nature, she has developed self-confidence issues. This has been exacerbated by the lack of a Mother figure in her life. She does love her Father, but most of all she wishes for friends who can accept her.

Due to the societal implications of a living Automata, Dr. Steven Sterling, her Father forced her to hide the true nature or reality of her being. He did this to protect her, as the P-B engine required to power her, is the first to be able to accurate transmit and alter emotional data as well as being the smallest yet conceived, to fit in her small frame. In fact it is this engine that gives her life at all, in many ways the Doctor considers it to be her soul. Above all else he wishes for her to lead a normal life, but that can only happen if she can accept herself.
