Aberrations: The unnatural denizens of the 'Deep Fog', Aberrations are also clouded in thick layer of fog themselves that render them resistant to almost all conventional weaponry. Rumours suggest that only by understanding the true appearance and nature of the aberration can they be made vulnerable. Eyewitness reports from survivors of Aberrations suggest that they form the physical appearance of the fears mysterious rumours surrounding the location they appear in. So understanding them could be a great insight into the nature of the 'Deep Fog' itself.
'Ares' Model Steamsuit: A now obsolete model of Steamsuit that as much smaller than current models, in fact the device was fitted to the person using it as opposed to the much larger 'Paladin' Models we have today. Current Era of Peace (1917 - 1962): Since the Great War, throughout Europe and among the major powers, peace has reigned. This is largely due to efforts after the great war to regulate conflict through the regular martial competition of Steamsuits and their Knights. Currently as our story starts we are still in the Current Era of Peace, however the odd occurrence of the 'Deep Fog' may serve as a catalyst to unravel this time of peace.
Deep Fog: A strange supernatural phenomena that has begun to appear across England, this supernatural fog appears to distort and shift the areas it appears over, twisting them into impossible shapes. Aberrations have been sighted within the fog and distorted space. So far the fog only seems to appear in areas in which there is a great degree of mystery or rumour surrounding a given location as if the fog is an arbiter of mystery itself. These areas are off limits to the general public due to people getting lost within the distorted fog.
Knights: Pilots who operate Steamsuits, usually only the best of the best when it comes to piloting a Steamsuit will earn the title of 'Knight', though it has become common slang to refer to all Steamsuit pilots as Knights. The premier location for Steamsuit training in the country.
Piezo-Babbage Engine: Exceptionally efficient steam engine produced based on concept blueprints by Charles Henry Babbage (1791-1871). Using the Piezoelectric effect these engines produce a large amount of electricity for little overall fuel intake. Due to their high capacity, miniature models are used to power Steamsuits. Whilst the larger models can power and entire residential section of a city. They appear similar in shape to a massive human heart, this has given them the nickname 'Steam-hearts'.
Steamsuit: Large mechanical device of humanoid shape that fits a single human pilot, fitted with a miniature 'Piezo-Babbage' engine. Since there first deployment in the Great War 40 years previously, iterations of Steamsuit have dominated martial conflict. Against a Steamsuit Battalions of men are rather obsolete, at least using current tactics. Therefore warfare has shifted to promote duels against single combatants known as 'Knights' who pilot Steamsuits in the name of their country.
Steamware: Originally a term to describe the attire worn by Knights whilst piloting their Steamsuits, the term now reaches a wider definition. This is because it has not come to describe a style of personal weaponry or armour worn over sections of the body that use the bodies internal energy as a fuel source. Based on the mechanics of Steamsuits, hence the name, these devices stain the hair of the user, though usually red the colour can be different depending on the user. Little is known on long term effects on the body, due to how experimental these devices are.
The Great War (1914-1917): The largest scale modern military conflict in Europe, dubbed by many as the war to end all wars. Due to advancements in military technology, this war became a war of attrition, which wore down both sides quite significantly. This was before the development of Steamsuits in early 1917, once 'Ares' Model Steamsuits were deployed by the British Expeditionary Force, both sides agreed to put a stop to the fighting. In the aftermath of the war it was decided that status between European nations should be decided in duels between Steamsuit pilots, this was conceived as a way to ensure that there would be no future war at this intensity or scale.
