Part-Time Miko

Original Narrative Video Game Pitch/Outline

Ever since I started making Pixel Art, I had always wanted to create tangible stories and worlds just like the ones I had experienced within some of my favourite pieces of media. Of course, at the time I lacked both the experience and the perspective to achieve this. Yet, this desire continued to grow within me and soon I began actively designing and writing characters.

During my Third Year of University, I was presented with a dilemma, which was what I wanted my Final Major Project to look like. I knew it needed to be something uniquely my own, that fulfilled all of my creative desires, but also be something that could be developed and iterated upon for an entire year. In the end I decided to make a game, something that became possible thanks to GB Studio, a Free-to-Use, Open-source game development engine for games that could run on original Gameboy hardware.

I knew that some of my more tangible writing projects I was working on at the time simply wouldn't work within both my own limited abilities and the restrictions present within the engine. So I reached back into my bag of existing artworks for inspiration. Ferris Himura, originally just Ferris, was the third character I ever made with Pixel Art and one I had grown quite attached to, she had various different iterations over the years. I felt that this was the perfect time to give her a story and world.

As the project developed I realised that that characters that I was writing contained tangible aspects of myself, and my understanding of my neurodivergence. I chose to lean into that idea to make the narrative of my game a way of communicating those realities though fun characters and emotionally resonant scenarios.

At the end of my third year, I was able to create a full, playable demo for Episode 0 (A pre-story chapter) of Ferris' story containing two main scenarios and at least twenty different named characters to interact with within a limited open-world. Whilst I have released a demo build of -Episode 0- it is by no means finished and I am still developing story ideas and characters within this world as a result a lot of what is here is subject to some amount of inevitable change.

With that being said, what follows is a introduction to the current outline, characters, world and a link to play the demo of Episode 0 now at: https://ozychlyrus.itch.io/part-time-miko-episode-0

The Five Episode Story:

- Fourteen years before Episode Zero, a young, sleepwalking Ferris manages to stumble into the spritual realm. The so-called reverse side of the world and certainly no place for the five year old Kitsune. Luckly, she is found by a ruler of the spirtual realm, the Daitengu Koroitori, who is intrigued by the young mortal. Unable to send Ferris back on her own, she enlists the help of her butler Kara to escort the child through the perils of the realm. Will the pair make it home, and what might they lose...

- Ferris Himura is a pretty ordinary girl, well, aside from her huge ears, tail and mysterious spiritual abilities she's had for as long as she can remember. She works part-time at the local shrine alongside a childhood friend. Having been caught sleeping on the job, Ferris begrudingly heads home. In order to not feel like she completely fumbled her day, she decides to spend her time on the way home, assisting with any and all issue she happens to discover...

- Six months prior, the head Miko of the Shirayama Shrine, known by most as Lady Shirayama mysteriously vanished, seemingly without a trace. This sent the other Miko of the Shrine into a frenzy trying to ascertain her whereabouts. In her absence, the balance between the Physical and Spiritual realms is beginning to wane. Ferris, a Kitsune girl blessed with Spiritual Abilities, decides to investigate this dissapearence for herself...

- Eighteen years ago, a couple escaped the totalitarian grasp of the Lunar Nation of '???', settling upon the Earth, they started a family and a peaceful life together. Now their past has caught up with them and they are swiftly taken back to the technologically advanced dystopia. Ferris, accused of assisting the criminals, is imprisoned on the Moon. In a land not connected to the spiritual realm, can Ferris keep her tail, literally...

- Currently too Work-In-Progress to reveal any details at all about it. An Episode intended to wrap up and conclude the story within the other Four Episodes...
